The end of April is sneaking up on me, so let’s knock out this month’s Beauty Box Battle. Both of these arrived while I was in Texas for US Quidditch Cup 11, so I’ll be shooting from the hip more than usual this month.
Also, make sure to read all the way to the end for an announcement!
Florals, for spring? Groundbreaking. But I’m basic enough to love florals and I love this color scheme. This box may very well have a home on my desk soon.
Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse
I don’t care that I have thin hair. Hair products just don’t thrill me. But I’m willing to be proven wrong.
Wilma Schumann Skin Care Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads
Your girl ain’t getting any younger and those eye crinkles are cropping up. I’ll take any help I can get.
Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm
This sample is ridiculously small. I bet I don’t get more than three uses out of it.
Smashbox Cosmetics Always On Gel Eye Liner
Another damn black liner. I know there’s no way that Birchbox could have known I got something similar in Ipsy last month, but ugh. It would have been nice to get the green or rose gold one instead. I’m not gonna even bother with posting a swatch because (surprise!) it’s black.
OUAI Volume Spray
Two volumizing hair products? In one box? Yawn. Come on Birchbox, be better.
12-year-old Liz loved her butterfly clips. My mom would put them in my hair all the time. 33-year-old Liz, on the other hand, is a little more ambivalent.
Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks
Ipsy gives me two eye masks instead of one? Score! I spy lavender in this ingredient list so I’m excited to slap these on my eye bags.
No. 7 Early Defence Glow Activating Serum
Serums make my skincare loving heart sing. I already liked the No. 7 serum I got in my Target Beauty Box, so I’m looking forward to this.
Vasanti Concealer Buffer Brush
I’m always down for more brushes, but I already have a verrrrrry similar e.l.f. concealer brush that I already like and use regularly. They look really similar, so let’s see if this will take over or be defeated by it’s $3 counterpart.
OFRA Blush in Chameleon
Ipsy, you picked a bad time to send me a powder blush. I’ve fully committed to my Glossier Cloud Paints and I highly doubt that anything could coax me away from this summer.
AURORA 24H Lip Stain in Salmon
I’ve never used a lip stain that didn’t end up being a patchy pain in the ass to apply. But we’ll see, I guess.
Ipsy by miles. It wasn’t even that good of a showing from Ipsy; it’s just that my Birchbox was terrible. The best part of Birchbox this month? The box itself. Second best were the eye patches, and even then, Ipsy gave me twice as many. Be better, Birchbox. I have two months left and Sephora Play! is looking more interesting.
(Sorry for the lack of photos this time around; the last month was a busy one and I didn’t wear much makeup.)
Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré

Still love this. It kept my skin from being parched after suffering wind burn but didn’t feel heavy on humid days. Texas weather sucks, but this moisturizer doesn’t.
Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray Pre-Styler
Original rating: 💄💄 // Updated rating: TBD
Good news: I got a hair iron from my sister for my birthday! Bad news: been too busy to try using it with this spray. I’ll table this review for later.
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye

It was a good eye cream. Not good enough to go buy a full size when I have other eye creams to go through, but still good.
ModelCo Luxècreme Long Wear Lipstick in Sienna
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄 Flattering. Easy to throw on and not think about. It has a home in my regular rotation now.
Smashbox Cosmetics Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer
Original rating: 💄 // Updated rating: 💄
All this did was make a mess of my lips. It was a total dud that I tossed after one use. I love Smashbox in general, but this was a total fail.
Meg Cosmetics Good Night PM Masks
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄💄
This mask had such a soothing smell, which makes sense because there’s lavender oil in it. If I saw it at the store, I would pick some more up, but I’m not attached to any particular sheet mask enough that I’d buy them online.
Tarte Cosmetics Sex Kitten Eyeliner
Original rating: 💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄
Okay, this ended up being a useful little thing to line my upper waterline. It can live in my travel bag for now.
Contour Cosmetics Lip Kit Pencil in Stud
Rating: 💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄
Hella dry, hella crumbly. The color was nice but not enough to redeem this. My lips are dry enough as it is, thanks you. This thing got trashed along with the Smashbox lip transformer. Ain’t nobody got time for dry lips.
Hikari Cream Pigment Eyeshadow in Shine
Rating: 💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄
I’m still bitter that I didn’t get the chartreuse color. Used it once, but didn’t again. I might use this for Argonauts season, but if I don’t, it’s finding a new home.
City Color Cosmetics Glow Duo
Rating: 💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄
As I predicted, the “bronzer” shade remained untouched all month. I didn’t even feel like using it as eyeshadow. The highlighter, on the other hand, is right up my alley. Rating is staying at the midpoint to reflect my split thoughts on this.
March’s champion is…
Birchbox might have disappointed me in April, but my March samples didn’t disappoint even if April was a bust. Ipsy, on the other hand, had two lip products that were total duds. Birchbox wins for sucking less.
One final announcement!
I love creating beauty content, but not everything I want to do feels like it’s long enough for a blog post or has a place on my personal Instagram. So, I decided to start an Instagram account solely for beauty content: @barcelosbeauty. I’ll still link to all my blog posts on @barcelosknows, but @barcelosbeauty will have my Beauty Box Battles along with smaller things like mini-product reviews, makeup flat lays, face of the day posts, and other miscellaneous beauty content. Give it a follow if you’re interested!
