I spent more weekends away than I did at home this July, and that had an impact on how last month’s beauty box haul ranked. Let’s dive in.
I love the iridescent mermaid-ness of this fabric. And if you haven’t noticed, teal/aquamarine is one of my favorite colors.
And now for the goodies that came inside…
Smashbox Studio Skin 42 Hour Concealer in Light/Medium
Even though Ipsy sent me a full-sized concealer last month, I was happy to get another, especially since I’m already a Smashbox fan. However, when I swatched it… this came out orange. I’ll try it out on a day that I don’t have to go out in public or when I have time to wash it off and start over, but this does not bode well.
PureHeals Charcoal Peel-Off Mask
Can you have too many charcoal masks? Probably, but I haven’t reached that point yet. I’m always excited to get these but there’s nothing revolutionary about them.
City Color Cosmetics City Chic Eyeshadow in Skinny Latte
I’ve gotten a few shades of this eyeshadow before, but I really like this sheer glowy color. A massive pan of burgundy or green is cool but not the most useful or versatile. This shade might even work as a highlighter?
RealHer Moisturizing Lipstick in Girl Power
I’ve seen this brand floating around in other people’s beauty subscriptions, so it’s nice to be able to try it for myself. I prefer moisturizing lipsticks over more matte formulas, and this mauve shade is right up my alley.
Bonus: SLMissGlam N15 Eyeshadow Brush
I got this with my Ipsy points. This brand has an odd name but I love their brushes. This is the fourth one I’ve gotten from Ipsy and a welcome addition to my collection.
This rating isn’t low because this month’s drawstring bag is bad. It’s just boring. At least last month’s bag fit the Miami Vice-ish theme.
But let’s not judge a bag by its cover. Let’s see what’s inside…
Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Paaarty
A year ago, I was ambivalent about blush. Now, it’s probably my favorite category of things I put on my face. I just love how it can change up your whole face. This neutral and versatile shade was a Sephora birthday gift last year, but I wasn’t a member yet so I didn’t get it. I’m glad I got my hands on it now!
Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Color Splash Lipstick in Salt Lyfe
The name is long and ridiculous, but it fits me well enough. This looks a little cooler in tone than the RealHer lipstick I got from Ipsy, but otherwise they’re pretty similar. I’ll be comparing these head to head in the coming month to see which performs better.
Biossance Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer
Local company: ✅
Ethically sourced ingredients: ✅
Light texture for summer: ✅✅✅
I love getting skincare but this sample was especially excellent. The light texture makes it a great summer moisturizer. I do not want layers of stuff melting off my sweaty face.
Korres Wild Rose Vitamin C Active Brightening Oil
Vitamin C is one of my favorite skincare ingredients. It’s supposed to even out your skin and help it produce collagen… which means (hopefully) fewer wrinkles. I don’t expect miracles from my skincare — anyone who does is asking for disappointment — but I’m happy to add this to my routine.
Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen
Speaking of collagen, here it is in serum form! I wonder if this will play nice with the Korres, or if I should use one in the morning and one at night. I’ll do a little homework. Stay tuned!
Bonus: Briogeo Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Crème
I have yet to try a Briogeo hair product that I don’t like. On the other hand, I have yet to try a Briogeo hair product that I like well enough to purchase myself. However, I can never have too many samples of hair dryer protection products. I’m not married to any one brand.
July’s winner so far…
This was a really tight race, but since Ipsy stumbled out of the gate with that orangey concealer, Sephora Play barely edges it out.
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄💄
Nothing really new to report here. I didn’t even use this sample; I’m hoarding it because I love this stuff but I’m not a Birchbox subscriber anymore.
Davines SU Hair & Body Wash
Updated rating: 💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄
Okay, this turned out better than expected. I’ve been on the road more weekends than I’ve been home in the past month and having something a multitasker this small came in handy as I try to combat my overpacking ways. I wouldn’t use this at home but it’s great for travel.
Derma E Vitamin C Concentrated Serum
Rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄💄
This sample size was just as generous as I thought it was when I received it; I use a pump of it every morning and I still haven’t run out! It’s brightening and hydrating but I’m holding out on buying a full size until I go through my stash of similar serums first.
Marcelle Xtension Plus Curl Mascara
Original rating: 💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄
As I mentioned last month, this mascara had a lot to live up to considering that Glossier Lash Slick is my ideal lengthening mascara. I didn’t notice any curling action, but it was thicker. While I prefer a more separated look, from far away, it looks similar enough to Lash Slick that my iPhone camera (I know, I need to step up my game and use my DSLR more) couldn’t pick up any real difference. Tossing this into my travel bag to use it up.
Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream
Original Rating: 💄 // Updated ranking: 💄
It was a nice foil packet while it lasted.
Luxie Small Shader Eye Brush
Rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄💄
As suspected, this was the perfect size and firmness to help me build up and blend the darker shades of my Lidstars, especially Herb. I love love love every Luxie brush I’ve ever gotten.
Biobelle #UnicornGlow Perfect Radiance Tencel Facial Mask
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄💄
I was in serious need of #treatyoself time over the last month and these masks did the trick perfectly. My face felt good after using them and the masks smelled so good. If I ever run out of sheet masks (I have a minor hoard at the moment) these are on my list to repurchase.
Kokie Cosmetics Be Bright Illuminating Concealer in Medium Beige
Original rating: 💄💄💄// Updated rating: 💄💄💄
While it was too dark to be an under eye concealer for me, this did a decent job at covering the hormonal acne (read: period pimples) that I get on my chin. I’m not moved to repurchase it whenever I finish this, but it’ll do for now.
Pixi by Petra Glow Tonic
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄
Is this still my favorite toner? Yes, absolutely. However, the travel size has a wide open top while the full size does a better job of controlling how much product comes out. Because I am me, I ended up spilling a bunch when I used the travel size one night. Packaging matters.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Step 1 Skin Equalizer Hydrating Primer
Original rating:💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄
As the weather has heated up, I’ve wanted to put less on my face. I replaced my moisturizer with this for a few days and liked how it felt. I just got a Sephora gift card and I’m thinking the full size might be worth the 37 dollar price tag? Or is it the gift card talking? We’ll see.
Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄
I had the same problem with this that I had with my sample of the Pixi Glow Tonic. The top is too wide open, I’m clumsy, and I can hardly see without my glasses. You know what that means: I spilled half of it.
Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick in Queen B
Original rating: 💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄
I was generous when I received this. I should have known that liquid lipsticks are not my thing because they are drying and finicky to apply. That is the last thing I need, especially in the summer. The color is nice, though. It’s just more something I’d wear in the winter/early spring.
AmorePacific Treatment Enzyme Peel
Original rating: 💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄💄
This stuff is so cool. Unlike the Glow Tonic, which I use as an everyday toner/exfoliant, I would use this product about once a week or whenever my skin was looking/feeling dull. I’d pour a little into my hand, add water, and it would turn into… a gritty foam? That sounds harsh, but it wasn’t harsh on my face at all! However, the full size is 60 bucks! On the other hand, the mini is $22, which feels more reasonable considering how little I use. We’ll see how I feel about it after I finish this sample. I use it so sparingly that it will be awhile.
IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo
Original rating: 💄💄💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄
Even though this had charcoal in the name, it didn’t come out dark, which was a buzzkill. Still, it did a great job of extending my hair washing for a day or two during my weekends on the road. I put it in my travel bag when I got it and it won’t be leaving until it’s empty.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation in Y335 Dark Sand
Original rating: 💄💄 // Updated rating: TBD
Even though I kept this on top of my makeup drawers with my other things to try this month, I never touched it. Like I said last month, I don’t typically wear foundation, so this sample was wasted on me.
Yves Saint Laurent Mon Paris Eau de Parfum
Original rating: 💄💄 // Updated rating: 💄💄💄
While this is sweeter than something I’d pick out for myself, it grew on me. I’ll likely use it up, but I definitely don’t see myself buying it. Still, it was a nice change of pace.
June’s champion is…
While my two July boxes came in with a bang, these three June boxes are going out with more of a whimper. Birchbox was great while it lasted — it introduced me to a lot of products I’ve come to love. However, it was time for it to go because Sephora Play! eclipsed it. I’ve had Ipsy the longest (almost three years now!) and it’s been dependable month in and month out. It keeps the June crown.
Coming up this week!
This week’s blog posts are all beauty, all the time. (I needed a break from quidditch, y’all.) I’ve mentioned repurchases and my travel makeup bag quite a few times, so I decided to a blog post dedicated to each.
Oh, and if you’re not already following @barcelosbeauty on Instagram, go do that, too.
